Jim Derian is Of-Counsel to Paesano Akkashian Apkarian, P.C., where his practice is focused on alternative dispute resolution and commercial litigation.  With over 30 years of legal experience, Jim is well versed in a broad range of practice areas, including employment litigation, products/warranty litigation, commercial litigation and automotive regulatory compliance.  He has extensive experience in matters involving supply chain disputes, autonomous/connected vehicles, cybersecurity, data privacy and mobility matters generally.

Prior to affiliating with Paesano Akkashian Apkarian, P.C., Jim was Corporate Counsel for Aptiv Corporation (formerly known as Delphi).  Before that, he was a litigation partner at the law firm of Butzel Long.  Jim has successfully tried cases in the state and federal courts of Michigan on a wide range of legal issues, including commercial disputes, product liability, insurance coverage, automobile negligence and wrongful termination.

Jim has been a member of the American Arbitration Association’s panels of commercial and employment arbitrators and mediators for more than 15 years.  He is also a certified mediator under MCR 2.411 and maintains an independent mediation and arbitration practice.

Jim received his J.D. from Wayne State University, where he was a member of the Wayne Law Review.  He received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he was a part-time instructor in the Slavic Languages and Literatures Department.

Jim was an elected Township Trustee for the Charter Township of Oakland in 2000-2008, and was Chairman of the Township’s Planning Commission during 1988-2000.
